This year, I started at a new school teaching a new grade. I have always taught Middle/High School English and now I am teaching 4th & 5th English and Reading. I never thought I would teach that young!
Going into this new assignment (and my ninth year teaching), I decided that it was time for me to update my classroom decor. For the first eight, I have maintained them the same decor with a few additions every couple of years. I decorated my room with movie posters of book adaptations. Most of these titles were more directed towards Middle School and High School readers and not appropriate for my new audience. I decide to go with a neutral and farmhouse decor for my new classroom. Here is a quick tour.
This is my teacher's area. I have an old library catalog that I have repurposed as a supply cabinet. I also use a hanging file folder, that I use to organize the week's copies by day. I have a circle table and not a desk. My teacher's desk is in an office area I share with other teachers in my POD. All of our students are assigned a color group and have all the same core teachers. This allows us to plan cross-curricular and be flexible with our scheduling.
My teacher area also serves as my guided reading/small group area. I hung a small white erase poster board behind me to give me a place to write during small group lessons. I have a large white-board that runs across the front wall of my entire room for whole group lessons. I decide to incorporate Sunflowers into my decor since they are my favorite flower. I also added some twinkle lights because our campus theme this year is "Be the Light."
The cabinets next to this area are where students will store their backpacks in the morning.
This is my student area. This is where students go to find make-up work, turn in assignments, and collect students' supplies. The shelf next to this area is where I keep student textbooks. I like to provide an area where students are able to get what they need on a daily basis like pencils and notebook paper.
The rest of the pictures are just a look at the rest of my decor. The posters next to my bulletin board go over literary elements (Plot, Setting, Conflict, Point-of-View, Tone, Mood, Character, and Theme).
