When I started my journey to organizing my home in order to make it more manageable, I started with my kitchen. It is no exaggeration when I say, not one cabinet, drawer, or shelf in my kitchen was functional. Here are my five favorite products I used to make my kitchen usable.
1. Better Homes and Gardens Canisters from WalmartI love these pantry canisters, and these are the only ones I use. They come in many sizes, easily stack on each other, and are airtight. You can buy individuals or they have a few 3 or 4-pack options. My favorite time to pick them up is around Black Friday when Walmart will have a larger set for a ridiculously good price. These are great to store products in and get rid of the original packaging. Food stays fresher, they fit better into my tiny pantry because I can stack them, and it is easier to see if I am low on something.
2. Room Essentials Plastic Storage Bins from Target
I actually use these all over my house in different sizes. You can find these kinds of bins at Walmart and Amazon too, but the majority of mine come from Target. They range from $5 to $6 dollars a piece and sometimes come in value packs depending on the size. I know I could find some cheaper options, but the plastic these are made from is really sturdy and I want to make sure they hold up to day-to-day use. They also come in a wide range of colors. I like the narrower bins to group food categories. This also allows me to get rid of a lot of the bulkier packaging. I have two of the medium size bins on the top shelf of my pantry for things like paper plates, paper lunch bags, and plastic ware.
3. Smart Design Over the Door Pantry Organizer from AmazonBefore I had this shelving system, my spices were all thrown on the top shelf of my pantry where I had to get out a step stool to reach them. They would fall over, get lost behind things, or all fall on top of me as I searched for what I needed. This also led me to buy spices that I already had because it was hard to keep track. This over-the-door rack allowed me to create an easy-to-use spice rack and added some much-needed extra storage. I now use my spices much more for cooking and do a lot more recipes and a lot fewer boxed meal kits. And, I truly think that this more user-friendly setup is a big part of that.
4. X-Cosrack Adjustable Water Bottle Organizer from Amazon
Amazon has a lot of great options for water bottle holders, and if you don't have one, you really should consider one. This is the one I happen to have. Our water bottles are stored in the cabinets over the microwave. Again, I had issues with things falling on my head and having to move things out of the way so I can find what I need. This makes it easier to put away, find, and take out our water bottles and travel coffee mugs. It takes advantage of the vertical space to give me more efficient storage. I also like that I can only fit so many on the rack, preventing me from ending up with too many bottles.
5. Plate Rack from Ikea
Having my plates stacked on top of each other just doesn't work for me. Especially since I had different sizes stacked on each other. It made putting dishes away frustrating and my cabinets felt cluttered. Having my plates vertical makes it so much easier to get to what I need and speeds up unloading the dishwasher. I did have to rearrange all of my kitchen uppers and declutter my kitchen plates in order to use these, but those were two things I was doing to make my kitchen more functional anyway. If you aren't near Ikea, Amazon has some options like this one. Or, if you are handier than me, you can probably make your own.
While I have started using a lot of different organizers in my kitchen, these are the by far the five that had made the most difference. I no longer avoid cooking or tidying my kitchen because everything has become infinitely easier.
